Entry: The Use of Videos, Movies, and Others in Classroom

The main purpose of this workshop was to explain the importance of using videos, movies in classrooms. Because we are in a technological era, teachers need to take advantage of it and use it in classrooms in order to encourage participation among students. History, definition, uses, advantages, disadvantages, how to make them, where to acquire them were some important details developed in the workshop. During this workshop, we take into account two important advantages. The first one is that the use of movie and videos in classrooms develops active learners because they are going to acquire knowledge while they are having fun. Moreover, students’ interests increase because of the use of technology. The second advantage is that students improve their listening and speaking skills. It is a great idea to use these authentic materials because students learn how the language is used. Nevertheless, using videos and movies have their disadvantages. For example, students pay more attention to the graphics than the audio. Students get distracted because they can pay more attention to the pictures and graphs that the audio while they are listening. For this reason, teachers need to be careful when using a movie or video during their lessons. Lack of equipment or internet access is another disadvantage because teachers depend on it. If there is no adequate equipment or internet access, teachers cannot take advantage of these materials at all. Designing our own activity was very good because we can realize how it works the disadvantages and advantages that these have. We consider that designing our own material is the only way to realize how these materials work and how to take advantage of them. Briefly, videos and movies are gorgeous tools that teachers can use during their lessons; they are very attractive and innovative because students are accustomed to using these materials during their free time, so they feel comfortable.
