Entry: Listening Resources

The objective of this workshop was to demonstrate the way listening activities are implemented in classes. During this workshop, it was explained its history, importance, use, advantages, disadvantages. Moreover, some types of listening resources were mentioned such as documents, meetings, cartoons, comedy shows, quiz shows, and speeches. Listening resources are very important; however, it also has advantages and disadvantages. listening to music motivates and inspires students; students feel comfortable because they are familiar with it. Teachers need to take into account that songs must be attractive and known by the students in order to be fun for them. Listening resources also encourages thinking and remembering. It is easy for the students to understanding better the language if they know the context it is used. For this reason, it is better to use authentic materials. on the other hand,  there are two disadvantages that need to be taken into consideration when using listening resources. In some high schools, there is no the needed equipment to develop listening activities; unfortunately, many teachers cannot take advantage of listening activities because they have the adequate tools. Moreover, teachers need to take into that some listening resources (even if they are authentic) may be have some grammar mistakes or misused vocabulary, so it can affect student’s learning process. The most interesting part of the workshop was when we switched our roles and behave like students through the implementation of the activities because it gave us the opportunity to see how different and enjoyable listening practices are. To conclude, teachers have to consider that listening resources are very useful in classrooms because it helps students to develop their auditory skills and know how the language is applied. If they are well used, listening resources can be one of the best tools teachers can have in their daily classes.
